youth and it's tendency to slip away
015. our new single Texasman is here + Coldplay, Ben Howard, Mutemath & more.
In 2014 an indie pop band moved to Del Valle, Texas—just outside Austin—with nothing but excitement and a hot tub shaped trailer. No fear of the city commotion or the very real possibility of failure or the 780 miles between themselves and everything they knew. Brother, sister, girlfriend, cousin and myself. All 5 of us crammed in a 2 bedroom house with desert-colored siding. We grilled cactus on the barbecue, we stayed up late designing album artwork, we had a scorpion in our shower—I can’t remember it’s name, but we named everything. We called ourselves January May. Pipsqueaks in the big city. We loved everything and hated everything. We trusted each other and betrayed each other. We had good gigs and seriously awful gigs. The new single from Sig Wilder & Friends, Texasman, is a song about that time.
In the spirit the past, here are some albums that have slipped away from me.
Coldplay - Ghost Stories
Aside from Parachutes this is Coldplay’s most beautiful album.
The Civil Wars - Barton Hallow
These were the harmonies we strived for and the romance scandal we lived for.
Twenty One Pilots - Blurryface
This was the CD that we played the most in our GMC big-ass SUV.
Ben Howard - Every Kingdom
This album holds up. Still love.
Andrew Belle - Black Bear
This was the album we bonded over with our producer.
Switchfoot - Fading West
Proof that I was a christian.
Jon Bellion - The Definition
My early foray into beat production.
Mutemath - Vitals
Switchfoot adjacent. A damn fine album.
The albums above were influential in that time of my life. I may not enjoy them the same way I once did but I appreciate the time they spent in my life. Next month I’ll be sharing Sig Wilder & Friends’ new music video.
