Exactly one year ago I received a message in my inbox that said ‘Just wanted to say how much I’d love to make your next music video for you.’ It was director and filmmaker Taylor Nixon. We didn’t have any music videos. Our song, Texasman, had just come back from the mix engineer. The timing was right. Fast forward 12 months and I’m happy to announce the release of our debut music video for our latest single, Texasman.
Taylor and I had a coffee on a sunny Monday in December 2022 to get to know each other and discuss how we might work together. He drove a busted up van just like I did. Seemed like a good sign to me. A few weeks later he presented the concept for ‘Texasman’ as an art form within an art form within an art form — a painting inside a video inside a song. He also presented several other ideas but we quickly circled back. It felt right to include a portrait artist in the video — after all Texasman is about looking myself face on. Once we found Clark Roworth we were off and away - his macabre style was perfect for our vision.
Texasman is about the past - about youth and its tendency to slip away. The song concerns the time I lived in Austin with an indie pop band. We were living far away from home with big plans and dreams. Listen and read along with the lyrics.
desert house
big city dreams
down the highway
cats in crowds
chris and caro are gone today
so we lay out with the scorpions in the burweed
close our eyes dream a life
evening sun you feel it well past 9 o clock
two bedrooms packed with all 5 of us
morning heat
good morning another day to believe
texasman
texasman
I’m looking up at your highlights
down here pining the spotlight
truth is love
the truth is on the other side I still can’t reach
still some dull shade of green
coolest crush I’d ever seen
coolest cuz don’t turn back on me
that youthful buzz mmm oh come back to me
