Angel Olsen’s Big Time
It’s not country, but it’s not not country.
I’ve been obsessing over Angel Olsen since lockdown 2020. Devouring her back catalog, I’m in awe of how every album she releases has its own feeling, yet it’s always an Angel album. Like she is building each one on top of the other, expanding to new places but never losing the smoothness. Song writing at its finest. Big Time is her first studio album of new music since I’ve been on the bandwagon. The first new album always holds a special place for me. Is there a name for this… In my mind I sometimes think of it as the artist’s first album (bit self-centered eh?), as if the new album is the beginning, and the ones before that are simply prequels. I have this feeling with Big Thief’s Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, Mac Miller’s Circles, Laura Marling’s Song For Our Daughter, and many more. No matter where you begin with Angel Olsen you won’t be disappointed.
Love the look of the compact disc for sale on Bandcamp. Need to get a boombox first.
Doom Trip Records’s Doom Mix, Vol. V
Do I have permission to connect to your angels?
Thanks to Bandcamp and their blog I’ve become aware of Doom Trip Records (Los Angeles) and I’ve only just skimmed the surface. Luckily they are very good at making mixtapes of their artists – a quick digest of the range of music they are releasing. I started with Vol. V and I’m hooked. This mix is packed full of morsels of audio production brilliance. It’s dance-y at times, heavy at others, but always rich and tasty.
Really keen to get my hands on this new technology. Looks beautiful.
‘stop myself’ V1 + lyrics
a demo of the first single from my upcoming album
So they told me
Pack it up
Do you mean?
Everything I love?
I was born to take your word
But oh how time flies
I wear earnest
Fits like a glove
Oh come over and see it
I’ll take it off
I oughta stop myself
Said enough
Sing along
Move your lips the same way
Pipe up
From your feet to your hips just sway
Let your body go
With the congregation
Don’t need no accessory
Don’t need no horse and gun
Oh by definition
We’re the same
And without the stetson
Still a cowboy all the way
I oughta stop myself
Said enough
to do list to whip this song into shape:
arrange and record vocal parts with Maddy
Maddy is from Tahini Bikini (give them a listen! they are killer)
extending that outro. giving it just a bit more juice + a slide geetar part.
then, a final mix from the wizard Philip.
and lastly, keeping my eyes open for a mastering engineer
